South Brown Lake Ranch
South Brown Lake Ranch is located in southeastern New Mexico in the shadow of the Capitan Mountain with an elevation of approximately 4,400 feet. Acreage within the boundary is comprised of 960 Deeded Acres, 4095 Federal BLM Lease Acres and 680 New Mexico State Lease Acres. The ranch is configured into one larger pasture and one small horse trap.
The Headquarters, located in the northwest portion of the ranch, has good access by a County maintained roadway. The headquarters improvements are comprised of one modern residence, maintenance shop, and a combination feed barn/tack room. All of the improvements have been constructed new within the last 8 years and are in excellent condition.
The
grazing capacity of the ranch is set by a Section 3 BLM grazing permit for 164
Animal Units on a yearlong basis. The current owner has conservatively stocked
the ranch over the past year, which has protected the turf that allowed the ranch to maintain a decent grass cover.
The terrain is classified as gently rolling with intermittent draws and drainages. Middle Arroyo Draw traverses the western portion of the ranch. Middle Arroyo is a primary drainage in the area fed by rainfall runoff that enhances grazing within the runoff area. Rock Tank Draw traverses the east side of the ranch with a large earthen tank that catches runoff providing a secondary watering source for livestock and wildlife. There are three additional earthen tanks scattered throughout the ranch.
Permanent water is provided by three wells, one of which is a partnership well with adjoining ranch. The wells are approximately 700 feet deep all equipped with electric submersible pumps. There is electric power at each of the well sites. Pumping capacity is from 7 to 10 gallons per minute. One well is utilized to provide water to a buried pipeline system that distributes permanent water throughout the property.
The vegetation is diverse with several species of native grasses to include blue, black and sideoats grama, tobosa, three awns with some buffalo grass and giant sacaton along the draws. The ranch has excellent grass cover with very little waste land or invader species. Although the general area has experienced below normal precipitation the last couple of years, management has conservatively stocked the rangeland to allow this ranch to have above average forage in comparison with other area ranches.
This small ranch is very nicely improved with easy access to all areas. This an easy one man operation well suited for the individual that would like a slower pace or a part time cattle operation.
