The Mt. Riley Ranch
The Mount Riley Ranch is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Santa Teresa, New Mexico along and on both sides of State Highway 9 all within Dona Ana County. The ranch is partitioned into four pastures, two south of the highway and two north of the highway. The southern boundary of the ranch is the International Border with Mexico. The fence along the border is a very secure structure that is heavily monitored by the U.S. Border Patrol.

The grazing capacity of the ranch is set and controlled by a Section 3 Bureau of Land Management Grazing Permit for 488 Animal Units on a yearlong basis. Livestock water is provided by five wells and a buried pipeline system. Four of the wells are located north of the highway with a minimal amount of buried pipeline. One well is south of the highway that supplies water to approximately 10 miles of buried pipeline with six livestock drinkers scattered across the north side of the ranch.
The Mount Riley headquarters is located approximately one mile north of paved New Mexico State Highway 9. The headquarters improvement consist of a small camp house, maintenance shop, large set of working pens and three wells equipped with electric submersible pumps powered by a generator. There is no electric or telephone service to the headquarters.
The pen capacity is approximately 900 head with shipping, processing, sorting and weighing capability. Livestock water is available to the pens.
The terrain varies from nearly level to rolling hills and undulating sand country. The southern portion of the ranch to include that south of the highway has a sandy profile with sandy loam soils. Primary grasses include, but are not limited to black grama, mesa dropseed, sand dropseed, spike dropseed and tobosa. Shrubs and browse include yucca, sand sagebrush, four winged saltbush and winterfat.
The northern portion of the ranch soils are comprised of rocky or stony loams with malpais rock hills and outcrops. The primary grasses include, but are not limited to black grama, sideoats grama, blue grama, bush muhly, vine mesquite and tobosa. Shrubs and browse include yucca, sotol, agave, winterfat, mesquite, greasewood and apache plume.
Approximately 45,000 acres of federal lease land located north of Highway 9 is within the West Protrillo Mountains/Mount Riley Wilderness Study Area. The WSA proposed designation restricts road access and the development of range improvements. Several large earthen tanks provide livestock water within the WSA. The NM State Lease lands within the WSA are not bound by such restrictions.
The ranch is located adjacent to the international boundary with Mexico. The border along the boundary of the ranch is fenced and heavily monitored by the U.S Border Patrol. Ranch ownership reports little or no problems with illegal border traffic.
The Mount Riley Ranch is located just 45 minutes from the major metropolitan area of El Paso, Texas. El Paso is city of approximately 650,000 people and can provide all the goods and services necessary to operate the ranch. El Paso International Airport provides major air carrier jet service internationally.
