Poker Lake Ranch
The
Poker Lake Ranch is located on the northern slope of the Capitan
Mountain in south-central New Mexico all within historic Lincoln
County. The ranch is easily accessible from New Mexico Highway
246 approximately fifty minutes from Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Ruidoso is a resort community that offers summer and winter
recreational opportunities. The Sierra Blanca Regional Airport,
which can accommodate most any size of private jet, is forty
minutes from the ranch.
The ranch is comprised of 12,396 Deeded Acres, 180 New Mexico
State Lease Acres and 120 federal Bureau of Land Management
Lease acres. The grazing capacity is owner controlled and
estimated by New Mexico State University to be approximately 290
Animal Units Yearlong with normal precipitation. Ownership
estimates the grazing capacity between 300 and 400 animal units
on a yearlong basis.
The Poker Lake Ranch offers a variety of uses that include year
around livestock production and big game hunting. The current
owners are operating a commercial cow/calf operation that is
well suited to the climate and the native forage. This is
excellent grass country with numerous varieties of browse and
native grass. The southern boundary of the ranch adjoins the
Lincoln National Forest with allowable public access to
thousands of acres of public land to hunt, hike or horseback.
The ranch lies in two noncontiguous tracts divided by New Mexico
Highway 246. The largest portion of the ranch is located north
of the highway comprised of approximately 10,000 contiguous
acres. The ownerⳠresidence is located south of the highway
with excellent access. In addition to the residence the south
side is partitioned into three small pastures and one small
holding trap in the vicinity of the residence. This portion of
the ranch offers breathtaking scenery being located at the base
of the Capitan Mountain. Kyle Harrison and the Arroyo Seco
Canyons offer intermittent running water with Ponderosa Pine,
cedar and juniper tree cover that provide for excellent elk and
mule deer habitat.
The portion of the ranch located north of New Mexico Highway 246
is primarily open grassland with a scattering of cedar and
juniper trees. The terrain is gently rolling with numerous
natural playa lakes scattered throughout this area of the ranch
that catch and store rainfall runoff for utilization by
livestock and wildlife. The northern portion of the ranch is
partitioned into 10 larger pastures and several small holding
traps. The Lowrey Camp, located in the north central portion of
the ranch, offers the improvement infrastructure to operate this
area of the ranch. The improvements are comprised of a
residence, barn and working corrals.
Permanent water is provided by three subsurface wells located
within the boundary of the ranch and one partnership well with
the adjoining ranch to the east. Associated with the wells is an
extensive buried water pipeline system that extends for
approximately fifteen miles and provides water to locations of
the ranch that otherwise would not have a permanent source of
water. The water system is improved with seven water storage
tanks and seventeen water troughs. The natural lakes also
provide an excellent source of water when there is adequate
rainfall.
This ranch offers good access, excellent cattle grazing, big
game hunting and numerous other recreational activities. This is
one of the most unique ranch properties that southern New Mexico
has to offer.
