The Elk Haven Ranch is nestled in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains
between Ruidoso, New Mexico and Tularosa, New Mexico at Bent, New Mexico. Access
is good by way of U.S. Highway 70, a four lane highway. The property is
comprised of 410 diverse acres that vary from nearly level irrigated pasture
land to hill land with draws and canyons. Elevation is approximately 6,000 feet
with a mild semiarid climate with plentiful sunshine.
Adjacent to the
ranch is the Telles Spring that has a variable flow dependent on rainfall,
however the spring is a reliable source of water to the property through a hand
dug acequia. Daily spring flow is measured up to 1.5± cubic feet per second or
680 gallons per minute, more or less. This is unrestricted free flow water. The
water right predates 1907 adjudication and one of the state of New Mexico’s
oldest declared water right. The Telles Spring supplies free flow water for
domestic, livestock, recreation, wildlife and irrigation purposes. The water
supplies ponds, flows through open dirt ditches and irrigation water pipelines.
There are no pumping costs.
This general area has a high density elk and
moderate mule deer population. The rich forage, abundant water and excellent
wildlife habitat produce trophy deer and elk with the elk scoring 320 to 400
class ranking. The ranch currently receives 4 bull elk permits.
Site
improvements are fully functional to include a 2,800 square foot ranch
residence, one additional single wide mobile home, barns and corrals. The ranch
has mostly new perimeter fencing and multiple fenced interior irrigated fields
for management of livestock. The cattle operation has supported up to 90 animal
units. Utilities and services to the property include telephone, electric,
propane gas, private septic system, domestic spring water and bottled drinking
water.
