The Douglass Ranch consists
of 4,700 acres of deeded
land, 640 acres of New
Mexico State Lease land, and
320 acres of uncontrolled
land, all native grass
rangeland under fence. The
ranch property is located
approximately 20 miles
northwest of the small
community of Elida, New
Mexico, all within Chaves
County. The Douglass Ranch
is accessed by Roosevelt and
Chaves County Roadways.
It is a contiguous tract of
land accessed by San
Patricio Road. The property
is fenced into three larger
pastures and one smaller
holding trap. Livestock
water is provided by three
wells, two equipped electric
submersible pumps and the
other with a solar powered
pump. The well depths are
approximately 150 feet deep.
Associated with the wells is
approximately 4 miles of
buried water pipeline that
furnishes water to all
pastures with the exception
of the Breaks Pasture on the
southern boundary of the
ranch. The Breaks Pasture
has no permanent water
source, but several earthen
tanks are strategically
located in the pasture for
utilization by livestock and
wildlife. The earthen tanks
have just been cleaned and
reworked. They are
considered to be seasonal,
but when they catch water
will hold for a substantial
amount of time. Ranch
management has utilized this
pasture when there is water
available.
The
Douglass Ranch is located in
some of the better ranch
country in New Mexico. The
climate and rainfall are
conducive to year around
cattle production on native
forage. The ranch has gently
rolling terrain and variety
of vegetation and browse.
This ranch has had no
livestock for almost a year
and with an abundance of
summer rains, the vegetative
cover is excellent. The
grazing capacity is
owner-controlled, estimated
to be approximately 100
animal units on a yearlong
basis.
